John Terry won the 1998-99 Chelsea Young Player of the Year award in his first year, ahead of older members of the youth team. Terry made his debut for Chelsea in a Worthington's cup tie against Aston Villa in the 1999-2000 season. He went out on loan to Nottingham Forest for six weeks at the end of that season, playing six games. In 2000/01, he won Chelsea's Player of the Year award. 2001/02 was a big season for Terry, as a regular for Chelsea, making 49 appearances. He scored the winning goals in the FA Cup quarter and semi finals. He made a number of appearances for England Under 21s and was captain for a few games. However, his international chances were ruined after an incident involving a bouncer at the Wellington Club in Knightsbridge. Terry along with team-mate Jody Morris and Wimbledon defender Des Byrne were arrested and charged with affray. Terry was banned from playing for England at all levels until the case was settled. The player was cleared of all charges in August 2002. John picked up an FA Cup runners-up medal in 2002.
